연금술은 다양한 고대 문화에서 본질적으로 물질과 영혼을 완성하기 위한 철학적이고 영적인 추구였다. 작품 《연금술사》는 고대 연금술의 핵심 개념인 '변환’을 현대 사진 매체로 재해석하여, 관계와 시간 속에서 끊임없이 재구성되는 자아의 상태를 탐구한 시각적 실험이다.
나는 미완의 물질을 완전하게 만들려 했던 연금술처럼, 내면과 외부의 관계, 그리고 의도와 우연 사이의 예측 불가능한 전환을 추적하며 자아의 흔적을 기록한다. 사진 속에 반복적으로 등장하는 검은 배경은 외부의 맥락을 지우고 물질과 자아가 순수한 형태로 드러나는 '근원적 공간'이자 변화의 무대를 상징한다.
작업은 자아를 비유하는 네 가지 원소를 중심으로 구성된다.
불(Ignis)은 순수한 불꽃으로 소멸과 밝음의 교차를, 홍채 클로즈업으로 생명을 유지하는 내면의 '의지'와 '불꽃'을 상징한다.
물(Aqua)은 그릇에 순응하며 형태를 바꾸는 물처럼, 타자와의 관계에 따라 유동하는 자아의 상태와 반영된 이미지를 다룬다.
흙(Terra)은 안정과 소멸을 의미한다. 흙의 형태와 잔해로 경험과 기억의 '축적과 붕괴'를, 맞잡은 손으로 그 시간 속에서 형성된 관계성을 시각화한다.
공기(Ventus)는 연기의 흔적으로 눈에 보이지 않지만 존재하는 '비가시적인 변이의 상태'를 기록한다.
이와 더불어, 본질을 이루는 제5의 원소, 에테르(Ether)가 있다.
내 작업에서 에테르는 꿈, 감정, 잠재의식처럼 보이지 않지만 자아를 구성하는 핵심 요소를 상징한다. 나는 흐릿함과 푸른빛을 통해 현실처럼 뚜렷하지 않지만 실재하는 내면의 감정 세계를 시각화했다.
나는 단일한 형태로 고정된 존재가 아니라, 지속적인 교환과 전이를 통해 재구성되는 집합체이다. 작품 《연금술사》는 이 변환의 흔적을 기록하며, 관객에게 이미지와 존재의 관계에 대한 질문을 던지는 나의 사진적 연금술의 첫 번째 장이다.

Alchemy, across diverse ancient cultures, was fundamentally a philosophical and spiritual pursuit to perfect matter and the soul. The Alchemist is a visual experiment that reinterprets the core concept of 'Transformation' from ancient alchemy through contemporary photography, exploring the state of the self as it is continuously reconstructed within relationships and time. Like the alchemists who sought to elevate imperfect matter to a state of perfection, I track the unpredictable transitions between inner and outer realities, and between intention and chance, recording the traces of the self. The recurrent black background in the photographs symbolizes the 'primordial space' chosen to eliminate external context, allowing matter and the self to be revealed in their purest form—a stage for change.
The work is structured around four elements, each serving as a metaphor for a state of the self: Fire (Ignis) is the pure flame symbolizing the intersection of extinction and brightness, while the iris close-up represents the 'will' and 'spark' of life within. Water (Aqua) is like water conforming to the vessel that holds it; it addresses the self's fluidity and compliance in relationships with others, along with its reflected image. Earth (Terra) is the form and debris of the earth ball visualizing the 'accumulation and collapse' of experience and memory, while the clasped hands signify the relationality forged over time. Air (Ventus) is the traces of smoke recording the 'invisible state of mutation'—present yet unseen.
Furthermore, Ether symbolizes the key components of the self—such as dreams, emotions, and subconscious—that remain invisible. Through blurriness and blue tones, I visualize the inner emotional world which is substantial yet lacks the clarity of reality.
I am not a being fixed in a singular form, but an assemblage that is continuously reconstructed through exchange and transition. The Alchemist records these traces of transformation, serving as the first chapter in my photographic alchemy that invites the viewer to question the relationship between image and existence.
