모든 이는 저마다의 흠을 안고 살아간다. 그러나 우리는 그 불완전함이 드러날까
두려워, 스스로 완벽이라는 가면을 쓴다. 그리고 타인에게도 정해진 기준을
따르도록 은밀히 강요한다. 사람이 사람으로서 갖는 자연스러운 흠,
이 자연스러움을 긍정하기 힘든 시대. 더 빠르고 선명해지는 세상 속 ‘흠’을
받아들일 여지는 점차 사라지고 있다.
‘흠’을 용납하지 않는 것은 시각 기술 또한 마찬가지다. 그 어느 때보다 이미지가 빠르게 생성-소비되는 시대, 사진은 점점 더 매끈해지고 획일화되고 있다. 기술이 재현하는 완벽은, 사회가 개인에게 요구하는 완벽과 같은 방향을 향한다.
나는 이러한 ‘흠’을 긍정해 보려 한다. 〈Breathing Faces〉는 사회적 전환기에
놓인 우리 세대의 얼굴을 기록하는 프로젝트다. 참여자들은 독립된 공간에서
자신의 숨소리에 귀를 기울이며 최근의 고민과 실패를 떠올린다. 그리고 호흡에 맞춰 카메라와 연결된 리모트 버튼을 눌러 스스로를 촬영한다.
촬영 과정에서 픽셀 시프트 멀티 샷 기술을 사용한다. 카메라 속 이미지 센서가
픽셀 단위로 이동하며 수십 장의 이미지를 연속 촬영하고, 이를 소프트웨어로
보간 합성하여 하나의 초고해상도 이미지를 만든다. 센서의 물리적 한계를
넘어서려는 이 정밀한 메커니즘이, 개인의 능력 한계를 끊임없이 밀어붙이는
사회구조와 어딘가 닮아 있다.
완벽을 위한 이미징 프로세스 속에서, 인물의 호흡은 사진에 예상치 못한 오류를 발생시킨다. 들숨과 날숨에 따른 미세한 움직임으로 픽셀들이 어긋나며, 얼굴의 윤곽은 흐트러진다. 오류를 품은 얼굴들은 표준화된 규격으로 대형 인화된다.
극한의 정밀도를 추구하는 최신 기술과, 완벽한 존재로 증명되어야만 하는
세대의 현실이 겹쳐지는 순간—어긋난 얼굴은 오히려 우리가 진짜로
살아 숨 쉬고 있음을 드러낸다.

Everyone lives with their own flaws. Yet we fear their exposure and put on the mask of perfection—and we quietly ask others to follow the same fixed standards. In a time when the natural imperfections of being human are hard to affirm, the room to accept such “flaws” shrinks as the world grows faster and sharper.
Visual technology is no different in its intolerance of flaws. In an age when images are generated and consumed at unprecedented speed, photographs grow smoother and more uniform. The perfection reproduced by technology advances in the same direction as the perfection demanded of the individual by society.
Weary of this sleek, polished reality, I choose to affirm the “flaw.”
Breathing Faces is a project that records the faces of a generation standing at a social turning point. In an isolated space, participants listen to their own breath, bring to mind recent worries and failures, and, in rhythm with their breathing, press a remote shutter connected to the camera to photograph themselves.
During the shoot I use pixel-shift multi-shot. The image sensor shifts by single-pixel increments to capture dozens of frames; software then interpolates and composites them into a single ultra-high-resolution image. This precise mechanism resembles a social structure that relentlessly pushes individuals past their own.
Within this imaging process built for perfection, breathing introduces unforeseen errors. movements between inhale and exhale misalign pixels; facial contours loosen and slip. These error-bearing faces are printed large, to standardized formats.
At the moment when cutting-edge precision meets the reality of a generation compelled to prove itself perfect, the misregistered face reveals something else: that we are, in fact, alive and breathing.
